Over 740 Community Members and Organizations Demand Accountability from MLSE for Discriminatory Action Against “Palestine” Supporter at Raptors Game

Scotiabank Arena Incident – A Call for Inclusivity and Accountability

On October 23, 2024, an incident at Scotiabank Arena highlighted ongoing concerns regarding inclusivity and freedom of expression in public spaces. During the Toronto Raptors’ home opener, a guest wearing a cap with the word "Palestine" was reportedly asked to remove it, then escorted out due to a supposed ban on “political clothing.” This event has raised significant concerns about discrimination and the silencing of peaceful identity expressions.

The Muslim Advisory Council of Canada (MACC) is calling for accountability and a commitment to inclusivity from Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE) and Scotiabank Arena. Together with over 740 community members and organizations, MACC is urging the arena to take the following actions:

1. Issue a Public Apology: A formal apology to the individual involved to acknowledge the impact on them and the broader community.

2. Policy Review and Update: A transparent reassessment of policies on attire and expression to ensure they do not marginalize cultural identities.

3. Community Engagement: Collaborate with affected communities to reaffirm Scotiabank Arena’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.

As a space representing Canada’s multicultural values, Scotiabank Arena is urged to address this matter and ensure that all fans feel welcome.
