Anti-Islamophobia in Health Care Training

According to the American Journal of Public Health, Islamophobia is detrimental to health equity, as it creates and perpetuates social stigma towards Muslims. This arises in physical and mental health concerns that Muslims are being discriminated against. Addressing discrimination related poor health is central to advancing health equity.

There is a broad range of who is impacted by Islamophobia. Islamophobia impacts healthcare students in their journey to becoming healthcare professionals through clinical practices, erasure of religious needs in textbooks, through discrimination-based assumptions by educators. Islamophobia impacts Muslim healthcare workers including doctors, nurses, technicians, pharmacists, physiotherapists and more. It impacts patients; children, youth, women, and seniors. It impacts patient caregivers such as the parents of a child patient or someone caring for an elderly family member.

We have developed this training to fill the gap that exists in understanding Islamophobia in the Canadian healthcare sector. It affects Muslims who are healthcare professionals, as well as Muslim patients. This training is a culmination of our communities personal experiences with Islamophobia in healthcare and broad research in understanding that there is a need in healthcare for anti-Islamophobia sentiments.

Who should take part in this training?

We have created this training for health system leaders-healthcare professionals, health executives & CEO’s, department heads, anti-racism/EDI departments, team leaders and anyone interested in learning how to contribute to an anti-oppressive healthcare system. If you are in the healthcare sector, this training is for you and your teams. We want to lessen the burden of Islamophobia on the average Muslim in healthcare, as either a professional or patient.
