Welcoming Sarah Jama to the Board of Directors

Sarah Jama is a courageous leader whose unwavering commitment to human rights, equity, and justice makes her an invaluable addition to our team. Her lived experience, grassroots organizing, and bold advocacy will deepen our work across sectors and strengthen our collective efforts to build inclusive, accountable systems that serve all communities.

Sarah is the co-founder of the Disability Justice Network of Ontario and a passionate community organizer from Hamilton, Ontario. With a Social Sciences degree from McMaster University and a Lead Organizer Certificate from the Centre for Labour Research and Education at the University of California, Berkeley, Sarah has consistently demonstrated visionary leadership rooted in justice and solidarity. She has delivered keynote addresses and led transformative workshops for organizations such as OCASI, ETFO, CUPE Ontario, and the Broadbent Institute, using her voice to champion equity and amplify marginalized perspectives.

From 2023 to 2025, Sarah served as the Member of Provincial Parliament for Hamilton Centre. In October 2023, she became the first Canadian politician to publicly call for an end to the occupation of Palestine following the escalation of violence in Gaza. Her principled and deeply human stand sparked national debate and highlighted the critical importance of speaking truth to power. Despite being removed from caucus and formally censured, Sarah remained resolute—continuing to advocate for dignity, justice, and the protection of free expression. Her courage in the face of political pressure has earned her widespread admiration and support from human rights defenders and civil liberties organizations across the country.

As a member of our Board of Directors, Sarah brings bold insight, fearless leadership, and an unshakable dedication to equity. Her advocacy in areas such as disability justice, anti-Black racism, and international human rights will be instrumental in guiding our organization’s strategic vision and expanding our impact nationwide.

We are honoured to welcome Sarah Jama to our board and look forward to her contributions as we continue advancing our mission to empower, protect, and advocate for Canadian Muslim communities. Please join us in celebrating this exciting new chapter with Sarah at the Muslim Advisory Council of Canada.
